1. Heart Rate
2. Blood Pressure
The Heart Rate and Blood Pressure are both taken with one of the Digital Blood Pressure Monitor.
The reading takes approximately 1 minute to gather the data and is extremely accurate in
monitoring measurements.
3. Cholesterol
The Cholesterol readings will be taken by the UNICUS staff.
The data that will be gathered in 3 minutes is the total cholesterol,
the HDL and LDL levels, triglyceride level and the total cholesterol to HDL ratio.
4. Lung Capacity
Utilizing a professional level spirometer, UNICUS will be able to ascertain
the lung capacity of every firemen in just minutes. For those lacking an acceptable level,
UNICUS also has lung training devices to help improve lung capacity up to 40% within a
6 week time period.
5. Weight
6. Body Composition
The Weight and Body Composition will both be taken using the Tanita Scale.
This apparatus uses bioelectrical impedance to determine the lean muscle mass versus the fat mass,
along with the overall weight. Lange skinfold calipers will also be available to measure body fat
if the need arises for further accuracy.
7. Sit & Reach
Individuals will sit on the ground with their legs stretched out and reach forward using the sit
and reach box to test the flexibility in their hamstrings and low back.
8. Muscular Endurance
Situps
Two protocols will be available depending on the individual. With the first, individuals have
1 minute to perform as many situps as they can. Situps will be performed by placing the hands
across the chest (arms not leaving the shoulders) and having elbows touch the thighs and back down
so the shoulder blades touch the ground, while another individual holds the feet. The individual
will be encouraged to complete as many in the minute as possible. With the second,
the Wellness-Fitness protocol will be used, complete with gym mat, metronome and 3 minute time limit.
The metronome is set for 30 sit ups per minute with the goal of 90 sit ups in 3 minutes or not being
able to keep up with the metronome as the end point.
Pushups
Two protocols will also be available here. In the first, individuals have 1 minute to
perform as many pushups as they can. Pushups will count only if the individuals’ chest hits
the fist of another as they lower to the ground. The test will be terminated if the
individual drops their knees or body to the ground. In the second protocol,
the Wellness-Fitness Initiative will be available complete with 5 inch prop,
metronome and 2 minute time period. The metronome is set for 40 pushups per minute
with the goal of 80 pushups in 2 minutes or not being able to keep up with the metronome
as the end point.
9. Force Plate
This will be used in the evaluation of both arm strength and leg strength.
The force plate UNICUS uses is equivalent to the Jackson Strength Evaluation
System set forth by the Wellness-Fitness Initiative Protocol. For the leg strength
test, a V-grip handle will be used, while for the arm strength test ,a straight bar will be provided.
10. Hand Grip Dynamometer
The hand grip device used is equivalent to a Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer and the
protocols used will be from the Wellness-Fitness Initiative.
11. Aerobic Capacity Test
Two tests will be available to use, depending on the equipment available.
One is the Submaximal Step Test using the FDNY Stairmill protocol. The other
is the Submaximal Treadmill Test using the Gerkin Treadmill Protocol.
Polar Heart Rate Monitors will be supplied for both protocols, as will stopwatches.
All will follow the standards set by the Wellness-Fitness Initiative.
In addition, UNICUS will also test the ability to run/walk a distance of 1.0 miles on
either a treadmill or outdoor distance (if available). The goal for every fireman is
to complete this under a 15 minute time limit, with a time of 10-12 minutes considered average.
